And if you're like me, you've tried many forms of psychotherapy and medication. I've benefited from both and continue to do so. There's an important issue though that's related to stigma. Each of these approaches sees people like me as having a disease or disorder to be treated. And that just compounds the shame that nearly all of us feel about being who we are, living with anxiety. By shame, I mean feeling different, flawed, not like other people, unable to enjoy our lives.
Then I learned about coaching. It starts from a radically different perspective. It sees each of us as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. As long as the level of anxiety isn't such as to impair our functioning, we are all naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. (It bears repeating!) For many reasons, we cannot always access that fundamental part of our nature as human beings. And that's exactly where a coach can help, even for people who have anxiety.
In addition to training as a professional coach, I'm a student of Focusing, a mindbody awareness process that is all about relationship and interaction, with yourself! It's a beautiful process of getting in touch with and integrating all the separated parts of yourself that sometime seem at war with each other.
